Sumatra

Sumatra is wild. Orangutans in Bukit Lawang, the vast caldera of Lake Toba, and the surf of Mentawai. Our itineraries give structure to a region that rewards travellers who plan ahead.

  • Bukit Lawang orangutans
  • Lake Toba
  • Mentawai surf
  • Banda Aceh diving

Which part of Sumatra should you pick?

Sumatra is too big for one trip, so you pick a region and fly into its own gateway. North Sumatra out of Medan is the orangutan and Lake Toba half. West Sumatra out of Padang is Minangkabau culture and the Harau Valley. Aceh, in the far north, is the diving. Kerinci is the trekking.

The mistake is trying to join two of them overland. The distances are long, the roads are slow, and a domestic flight between gateways almost always beats the bus. If you have one week, take one region. If you have two, take two and fly between them.
