Sumatra
Sumatra is wild. Orangutans in Bukit Lawang, the vast caldera of Lake Toba, and the surf of Mentawai. Our itineraries give structure to a region that rewards travellers who plan ahead.

Which part of Sumatra should you pick?
Sumatra is too big for one trip, so you pick a region and fly into its own gateway. North Sumatra out of Medan is the orangutan and Lake Toba half. West Sumatra out of Padang is Minangkabau culture and the Harau Valley. Aceh, in the far north, is the diving. Kerinci is the trekking.
The mistake is trying to join two of them overland. The distances are long, the roads are slow, and a domestic flight between gateways almost always beats the bus. If you have one week, take one region. If you have two, take two and fly between them.
| Region | Gateway | What it is for | A route we publish |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Sumatra | Medan (KNO) | Bukit Lawang orangutans, Tangkahan, Berastagi and Lake Toba | The 15-day Sumatra loop, or 9 days with kids |
| West Sumatra | Padang (PDG) | Bukittinggi, Lake Maninjau, Pagaruyung and the Harau Valley | The 7-day West Sumatra route |
| Aceh and Pulau Weh | Banda Aceh (BTJ) | Quiet, warm-water diving and snorkelling, plus the tsunami memorial sites | The 7-day Pulau Weh trip |
| Kerinci | Padang (PDG), then a long road transfer | Indonesia's highest volcano and the Gunung Tujuh crater lake | The 8-day Kerinci trek |
The one most travellers have never considered is the far north: our 7-day Pulau Weh diving and beach itinerary covers the ferry from Banda Aceh, the dive sites and what a week there costs.
