Best Time to Visit Sumatra

The best time to visit North Sumatra, the gateway to Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba, is the drier season from roughly May to September, when jungle trails are firmer and lake days are clearer. Sumatra sits on the equator, so it is warm and humid year-round and a shower is possible in any month; you are choosing the drier window, not a guaranteed dry one.

The short answer

Aim for May to September for the classic North Sumatra loop (orangutan trekking at Bukit Lawang plus Lake Toba). These months tend to bring less rain, which matters most for jungle trekking. The wettest stretch in the north is usually around October to December. Sumatra is enormous and its weather is regional, so the right month depends on what you are doing and where.

Sumatra's seasons

Because Sumatra straddles the equator, it does not have a sharp dry and wet season like southern Indonesia. Rain falls year-round, often as heavy afternoon or evening downpours rather than all-day rain. Temperatures stay warm at lower elevations and cooler in the highlands around Lake Toba and Berastagi. Treat any forecast as a guide, not a guarantee.

Month by month (the north)

  • May to September: The most reliable window. Drier trails for trekking, better lake weather, and good visibility from the highlands.
  • October to December: Generally the wettest months in the north. Treks still run, but expect mud, leeches, and the chance of trails or river crossings being affected by heavy rain.
  • January to April: Variable and humid, with a drier lull some years early in the period. Lower visitor numbers and green, lush jungle.

Best time for orangutan trekking

Bukit Lawang treks run all year, but the drier months from May to September make for firmer trails, fewer leeches, and more comfortable river crossings. Wildlife sightings are not seasonal in the same way, the orangutans are there year-round, so weather and trail conditions are the main reason to favour the dry season. See our Bukit Lawang orangutan trekking guide for how to plan the trek itself.

Best time for Lake Toba

Lake Toba sits at altitude, so it stays pleasantly cool and is rewarding year-round. The dry season gives the clearest views across the caldera and the calmest water for swimming, while the wetter months are quieter and especially green. It is a good rainy-season fallback when jungle trekking conditions are poor.

A note on the west coast

If you are heading to the Mentawai Islands to surf, the calculus flips to swell rather than rain: the main surf season runs roughly April to October. That is a different trip from the northern jungle-and-lake loop, so plan it on its own terms.

Whenever you go, our Sumatra itinerary maps the route, and the Medan to Bukit Lawang and Medan to Lake Toba guides cover the road transfers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rainy season in Sumatra?

In the north, the wettest months are usually around October to December, though rain can fall in any month given Sumatra's equatorial climate. The drier window is roughly May to September.

Can you trek to see orangutans year-round in Bukit Lawang?

Yes. Treks run all year and orangutans are present year-round. The dry season (May to September) just makes for firmer trails, fewer leeches, and easier river crossings.

Is Lake Toba worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes. Lake Toba sits at altitude, stays cool, and is quieter and very green in the wetter months. It makes a good rainy-season alternative when jungle trekking conditions are poor.

When is the best time to surf the Mentawai Islands?

The main Mentawai surf season runs roughly April to October, when the swell is most consistent. That is a separate trip from the northern Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba loop.
