The short answer
First, the key point: Kuta Lombok is not Kuta Bali. They share a name but nothing else. Kuta Lombok is a small, low-key surf town strung along a south-coast bay, surrounded by some of the best beaches in Indonesia. It is calmer, cheaper, and far less developed than Bali's south, though it is growing fast around the nearby Mandalika area. Most travellers base in or just outside the town and day-trip the beaches.
Kuta town centre: best for convenience
The town itself is compact and walkable, with the main concentration of restaurants, cafes, surf shops, tour operators, and budget-to-midrange guesthouses. Staying central means you can walk to dinner, arrange surf lessons and beach transfers easily, and keep costs down. It is the most practical base for first-timers and anyone without their own transport.
- Best for: First-timers, surfers, solo travellers, and budget to mid-range stays.
- Trade-off: The town beach is not the prettiest. The best beaches are a short drive away.
Around Mandalika and the eastern bays
East of town, towards Tanjung Aan and the Mandalika resort zone, you will find newer and more upmarket hotels and a wide, calm bay with white sand. This area is quieter and more spread out, and it is home to the Mandalika circuit that hosts the MotoGP, so check race dates if you want to avoid or catch the crowds. It suits travellers wanting more comfort and space, but you will need transport to reach the town's restaurants.
- Best for: Couples, families, and travellers wanting resort comfort and a calm swimming bay.
- Trade-off: More spread out, so you rely on a scooter or driver for dinner and other beaches.
Towards Selong Belanak: best for beginner surf
West of Kuta, Selong Belanak is a wide, sheltered crescent of white sand with gentle waves, widely considered Lombok's best beginner surf beach. A scattering of guesthouses, villas, and beach warungs have grown up around it. Basing here, or staying in Kuta and driving over, gives easy access to the friendliest learn-to-surf conditions on the south coast.
The south-coast beaches worth the drive
- Tanjung Aan: A horseshoe bay with two stretches of soft sand and calm, swimmable water. Excellent for an easy beach day.
- Selong Belanak: Wide, gentle, and the top beginner surf beach.
- Mawun: A quiet, sheltered cove, good for swimming, with little development.
- Mawi and Are Guling: More remote breaks for experienced surfers.
How to get around
The beaches are spread along the coast, so you will want transport. A scooter is the cheapest and most flexible option for confident riders, and the roads here are quieter than Bali's. Otherwise, hire a driver for a beach-hopping day, which is inexpensive by international standards. Kuta Lombok pairs naturally with the Gilis on a wider loop: see our 7-day Lombok and Gili route, and the Bali to Lombok crossing if you are coming from Bali.
