The short answer
Lombok sits just east of Bali and shares almost the same climate, so the dry season from May to September is the most reliable window. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months. For most travellers the sweet spot is the shoulder season: May, June, and September, when the weather is still excellent, the seas around the Gili Islands are calm, and prices and crowds ease off.
Lombok's two seasons
Lombok does not have spring or autumn. Like Bali, it has a dry season and a wet season, and the difference between them matters far more than temperature, which sits around 27 to 32 degrees Celsius all year. Lombok tends to be slightly drier than Bali overall, which is good news for beach and boat days.
- Dry season (May to September): Sunny days, lower humidity, calm seas, and the best underwater visibility. This is high season, peaking in July and August. It is also the main Mount Rinjani trekking window.
- Wet season (October to April): Warm and humid, with short heavy downpours, usually in the afternoon, rather than all-day rain. Prices drop and the landscape is greenest. January and February are the wettest months, and the Rinjani trek is closed.
Month by month
- May, June: Arguably the best months. Dry, still green from the recent rains, calm crossings to the Gilis, and far quieter than August.
- July, August: Peak season. The best weather, but also the highest prices and busiest beaches and boats. Book Gili accommodation and fast boats well ahead.
- September: Another strong shoulder month. Dry, warm seas, and noticeably fewer people than August.
- October, November: The wet season begins, but rain is often brief. Good value early in the period, with plenty of sunshine still likely.
- December: Festive demand lifts prices around Christmas and New Year despite the rain.
- January, February: The wettest, most humid months, with rougher seas. Rinjani is closed and some boat services are less reliable.
- March, April: The rains ease. April in particular can feel like an early dry-season month with strong value, and Rinjani usually reopens around April.
Best time for the Gili Islands and diving
For the Gili Islands, the dry season delivers the calmest crossings and clearest water. Underwater visibility is best from roughly May to October, and green turtles are seen year-round on the house reefs. Manta rays are most often spotted in the cooler months, while turtle snorkelling is reliable whenever the sea is calm. If your main goal is diving and snorkelling, prioritise the dry-season window and avoid the rougher January and February seas.
Best time to trek Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani is only accessible in the dry season. The official trekking season runs roughly April to December, and the trail is closed during the rainy months (usually January to March) for safety, as the volcanic terrain becomes dangerous when wet. The clearest skies and most stable conditions tend to fall between June and September. If Rinjani is the reason for your trip, build the dates around this window. See our Mount Rinjani trek guide for the full picture.
When to avoid the crowds
If quiet matters, skip mid-July to late August and the Christmas to New Year window, when the Gilis in particular fill up and fast boats sell out. The shoulder weeks in May, June, and September give you near-peak weather with more space. Whichever month you choose, our Lombok and Gili itineraries are structured day by day so you can match the route to the season.
