Things to Do in Canggu

Canggu is Bali's surf-and-cafe hotspot, a coastal strip of beach breaks, beach clubs, co-working spaces, and some of the island's best food. The essentials are a surf session at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, a sunset beach club, the Tanah Lot temple nearby, and simply eating your way through the cafe scene. Two days is plenty.

Learn to surf, or chase the swell

Surfing is Canggu's reason for being. Batu Bolong is the friendly, mellow beginner wave with surf schools right on the sand. Echo Beach and Pererenan offer punchier breaks for intermediates. Morning sessions have the cleanest conditions and lightest winds. Board rental and lessons are cheap and easy to arrange on the beach.

Beach clubs and sunsets

Canggu's beach clubs are an institution. Some are large party venues with pools and DJs, others are laid-back sunset spots on the sand. Black-sand Echo Beach and Batu Bolong both face west, so they deliver excellent sunsets. Arrive before sundown to claim a spot, especially at weekends.

Eat and drink your way around

Canggu punches well above its weight on food. Expect specialty coffee, all-day brunch, vegan and health cafes, and cuisines from across the world, alongside cheap, authentic local warungs. It is a genuine highlight, and a big reason long-stay nomads base themselves here.

Sunset at Tanah Lot

About 30 to 40 minutes up the coast, Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most iconic sea temples, set on a rock that becomes an island at high tide. It is touristy and busy at sunset, but the silhouette of the temple against the sky is worth it. Go with a driver and arrive an hour before sundown.

Slower mornings: rice fields and yoga

Between the cafes and the surf, Canggu still has pockets of rice paddy, particularly around Pererenan and the shortcut lanes. Early morning walks, yoga studios, and spa sessions balance out the busier afternoons. The area is compact enough to explore on foot or by scooter in the quieter early hours.

A note on traffic

Canggu's growth has outpaced its narrow lanes, so traffic, especially the Canggu shortcut, can be slow and chaotic at peak times. Walk or cycle for short hops, ride a scooter only if you are confident, and use ride-hailing apps for longer trips. Build extra time into any airport transfer.

Canggu pairs naturally with Ubud and Uluwatu on a first trip, see the 5-day Ubud, Canggu and Uluwatu itinerary, and it is a favourite base for solo travellers.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Canggu good for beginner surfers?

Yes. Batu Bolong is one of Bali's best beginner waves, with gentle whitewater and surf schools on the beach. Echo Beach and Pererenan suit intermediates. Mornings have the cleanest, calmest conditions.

How many days should I spend in Canggu?

Two days covers a surf session, a beach club sunset, the cafe scene, and a Tanah Lot trip. Surfers and remote workers often stay much longer because of the lifestyle and food.

Is Canggu better than Seminyak?

Canggu is younger, more surf-and-nomad focused, with black-sand beaches and a cafe culture. Seminyak is more polished, with upscale dining, shopping, and white-ish sand. Choose Canggu for surf and scene, Seminyak for comfort and convenience.

How do you get around Canggu?

The area is compact but the lanes are congested. Walk or cycle for short distances, use ride-hailing apps for longer trips, and only ride a scooter if you are experienced, as the traffic can be intense.
